Kids Bedroom Decorating Idea

As your children start to form their own personalities, it is perfectly natural for them to want a say in how their rooms will be decorated. Like so many things, when they were babies and toddlers, you decided everything from what they ate to what they wore to how their rooms should be designed. Encouraging them to have their own personalities and to express them, now that they are older, you can involve them in the makeover of their bedroom.

The Dos and Don'ts of Turning the Makeover into a Joint Project
Much as your son might want start the project with murals of his favorite movie or video game character, you know that one day he will grow out of this phase. Conversely, your daughter may want to see her walls adorned with a life size Ariel and Ursula but you being the wise parent that you are, you know that it won't be long before she has matured and want them replaced with the minimalist look.

When these discussions arise, the best way is to talk with them, but don't reason with them. By 9 and 10 kids can be reasoned with. At 6 and 7, this is quite a challenge. Instead, encourage them to use paint colors to express their personalities. If your daughter likes pinks, purples and lavenders, let her have all three.

By all means involve your kids in the decorating process. Remember, you may not want to live with some of their ideas, but to a certain extent because you want to encourage them to express themselves, you will both have to compromise. If you "get your way" more than your child, he or she won't want to spend much time in their bedroom, which defeats the purpose of giving them their own space.

There will always be areas of compromise with this project. Once you've painted the walls, he may want to live in a dark room with no light or she may want a spotlight for times when she and her friends are practicing to audition to be future American Idol contestants. Lighting is crucial and while living in the catacombs is not an option, maybe a small spotlight is.

Lastly, not everything your child wants to express him or herself has to come from a store. Encourage them to make things to proudly display on the walls or to place on furniture. This not only encourages their self-esteem, but you may just have a budding artist that neither of you knew existed.

Decorating Ideas for Spring

It's about time to open up the beach house or second home in the hills. This can be a daunting task or it can be fun, which way you go is up to you. Generally, if you have to do it, you may as well be happy about it. This article will help you add fun to the task of updating your cabin in the woods or your cozy home at the beach. Even though financial times are tough right now, you can still toss some springtime into these places without breaking the bank. These same ideas can be used in your full time home as well.

If you're not sure how to make your home suit your style, stop now and gather your thoughts. Peruse online stores for furnishings and accessories that you like. There are even free quizzes online to help you discover your own style. As you look at things or furnishings for your home, copy and paste pictures of the things you like the most to your word processing program and save them. Create an online booklet for yourself that helps to define your style. To keep your selections within your budget, see how many things you already have that can easily take on a new look with a little effort. You may be surprised at how easy these kinds of transformations can be.

Let's use a country or rustic theme as an example. Maybe now you have an eclectic or mis-matched grouping now, and you want to carry a rustic sort of theme. Using the furniture you already have, can you add country accessories to achieve your look? Maybe you will need to sand down a piece of furniture and re-stain it, or apply a coat of paint to achieve your look. Change the least expensive items first such as the throw pillows, pictures on the walls and area rugs. You could perhaps add a hand-made afghan throw to the back of your sofa.

New curtains can really change the appearance of a room too. Moving from heavy drapery to light airy options will give the entire room a totally different feel. Try to stick with light colors and fabrics that have a print that follows your theme. If you really want to keep heavier drapes at your windows to reflect sun and preserve air conditioned air, simply add tie backs with artificial flowers that compliment your theme. A touch of perfume made from a flowery scent will add to the ambiance you're trying to create.

If you have a lake house or cottage at the beach, you may want to redecorate with a nautical theme. It's easy to go nautical on a tight budget! A quick trip to your local dollar store will produce a bounty of goods to either use as they are or to create specialty items you've made for yourself. As you peruse the shelves, look at things for what they are, then do a double take to look at things for what they could be. This may take some practice, but you'll catch on quickly. For instance, you could make a wreath from a wreath form, some artificial water lilies, a frog from the children's toy section, and perhaps a lighthouse magnet or two. You now have all the pieces and parts to create a beautiful nautical themed wreath to welcome your guests.

The same idea applies well to the little bags of colored sand at the dollar store. Grab two or three bags of assorted colors of sand, one picture frame, and one piece of poster board. You can draw a very simple beach scene. Add glue to one section at a time and sprinkle the sand on top; allow that to dry. Repeat each step, moving from bottom to top or top to bottom as you go. When all sections are completed and dry, hold it up outside to allow the excess sand to fall off. Place your picture in your frame and hang it proudly! You just created your very piece of artwork to display for your guests, even if you have no artistic ability!

Green Decoration with Clay Pots

The hottest month of the summer is yet to come, but people in the tropical countries like India are already bracing up for the season and the scorching heat. Very soon, electronic home appliances markets will be abuzz with the new launching and lucrative discount deals of various brands producing refrigerators. And who knows, you will be one of the first ones to grab one of these deals to enjoy a cool and comfortable summer ahead. But, why not try a different option this time? Buy yourself a big clay pot or "matka", as they call it in India, and enjoy a chilled drink each time you fill thirsty.

Drinking water from an earthen pot is a healthy way to beat the summer heat. The water stored in a clay pot has a refreshing flavor and gets cooled to as much as 14-15 degree Celsius within a few hours. The water, in fact, is just at the "right temperature" in a clay pot - neither too warm for a summer sip, nor too chilled like refrigerated water, which is infamous for causing instant throat infections.

Wondering how does clay pot cool water in it? Now this is very basic science. Like any earthenware, a clay pot is porous in nature. It has no coating on its outer surface whatsoever. So, when water is poured into it, the inner walls absorb some amount of water and moisten the outer surface. This moisture when evaporates uses up the inner heat of the earthen pot, and consequently, brings down the overall temperature of the container. This effect works as long as the pores on the clay pot are kept clean and moist. For this, you just need to cleanse your pot on a regular basis, and you have a perfect chiller for your home. And the good thing is, this chiller does not increase your electricity bill either.

So, as you go green to quench your thirst this summer, use some creativity to make your clay pot look beautiful and befitting for your gorgeous home decor. Earthen pots available in the market come in various shapes and sizes. While a small pot may be easier to handle, a larger matka is always preferable for storing more water in summer days because you never know when your taps run dry. But nowadays, earthen pots are also available with small taps fitted to their sides and little above the bases. Go for this variety as they are really easy to use.

Now, once you have got yourself an earthen pot, take out your paint brushes and colors and start painting it. At first, hand-polish the outer surface of the pot with a piece of sand paper, and color it with enamel paint. Then, after the paint dries thoroughly, put on the base color and leave it to dry. Now, draw the pattern of your choice around the clay pot with a pencil or a piece of chalk. Once done with it, fill the designs with different colors, leave it to air dry. Finally, put a coat of varnish paint to give it a shining finish. But be careful with the last step - an overdose of varnish paint, can clog your pot pores for good. So, just go in for a single coat, and your decorative clay pot is ready.

Using Room Dividers for Home Additions, Apartment Living, or Restaurant Expansion

In the past 15 to 20 years, the trend for house design, as well as restaurant floor plans, has had a huge emphasis towards an open floor plan. An open floor plan lends itself well to entertaining and creating a spacious and airy feeling. Unfortunately, an open floor plan does not necessarily fulfill the need for a private room which can be dedicated to a home theater set up with a controlled acoustic environment, game room, or private dining.

The most recent trends in custom built homes have been to dedicate a room to a home theater setup or game room. If the home is already built, building an addition can be cost prohibitive to which any builder can attest. With the economy still in a recession and real estate values diminished, it may not make financial sense to add onto a home at this time. Should the home owner live in a loft-style abode in New York or similar city, building an addition is not usually an option. However, there are creative and tasteful alternatives which are inexpensive.

Restaurants, much like apartments, are not usually able to receive a building addition due to property space constraints and other buildings already attached. The only answer is to make use of existing space in a manner to maximize flexibility. Room dividers are the answer.

Many individuals may remember room dividers as those tacky accordion-styled sliders used in elementary schools and high schools. Forget about the tacky. Options available today have left those unimaginative and boring dividers behind. Whether the home owner or restaurant owner has a modern, industrial, or vintage decor, there is a style of room divider which will complement the interior space.

Room dividers, much like extra large pocket doors, help to break up an open and airy space into a more intimate and cozy environment. By installing room dividers, it can allow for multiple groups to make use of an area without distracting or bothering another. Sectioning off a portion of the living quarters or family room of a home can add to an individual's privacy while at the same time creating a whole new look to an otherwise stagnant floor plan. In a restaurant setting, private parties or business luncheons can be accommodated.

There are a variety of styles and materials on the market from which to choose. A transparent or frosted separation will lend itself nicely to a modern or industrial setting, while a more conservative and toned down tan or darker finish will be more appropriate for the traditional decor.

How to Find Antiques for Home Decorating

Finding the right antiques for your home can be an exciting and eventful journey. It may not always be fast, but there are different routes you can take to get the desired result. Of course you may have simply inherited your antiques; but then something such as this can be the spark to make you want to collect more and more. We're here to let you know where to go to find the top antique treasure troves. Make sure you have the correct antiques insurance - no matter where you buy your antique items - as it can give you a peace of mind to enjoy your pieces properly.

Auction
An auction house is one of the most notable places to find the antiques you are searching for, but also shows you items you may not have thought of yourself. Many of these salerooms have auctions either weekly, bi-weekly, twice a week, or monthly. However, most will have a viewing prior to the auction where you can have a closer look at the pieces you are interested in. If you are the winning bidder, keep in mind that commission will be added to your bid, which pushes the price up.

Online Auction
An online auction may sound risky but it can often be a fruitful search. As you can put in the keywords of what you are searching for, you will be able to see the products available, the current bid prices, how long is left on the auction, and how much the postage will cost you. The main problem is one of trust; you must assume that the seller is being honest about their item. However, if you succeed at an online auction, you may end up getting an item you want at a very desirable price.

Car Boot Sale
One person's junk is another person's treasure, and this is certainly the case at car boot sales. In fact, a lot of the time, a seller may not even know the full value of the items they are selling, which works for the knowledgeable people scanning the stalls for hidden gems. Look out for particular markings on items, and any damage they may have, as this should help you to make an approximate valuation.

How to Select an Area Rug

Area rugs are becoming so popular in western cultures and in particular black rugs are now being used to make a distinctive style statement in the center of a room. Black rugs used to be hung on walls as they were thought to be too costly and of high quality to be placed on the floor. Now, aside from black, there are so many colors, designs, patterns, quality and styles to choose from it become overwhelming. It is very important you select the correct area rugs for your home no matter what the décor. You can choose from traditional to contemporary designs to achieve that perfect look.

Here are some tips that you can follow in order to select a great area rug.

  1. Design. When selecting the design then think about the statement the rug will make in the room. Are you going to use it as a standalone rug or underneath a coffee table or other furniture? Select a rug that matches the other colors in the room so this way it will tie the room together.
  2. Color. When you are looking for that perfect area rug for a room with light or dull colors then select a rug that is either black, dark brown or has a brown border. If you have not used black anywhere else in the room then this dark rug will look perfect in the room. Another tip would be just to choose your favorite color and add white to it. However, if you are looking for a rug or ways to make a room look more spacious then a white or soft colored wool rug is just what you need.
  3. Size. If you are looking for an area rug for a bigger room then placing the rug in the middle of the room will define a room's space. Then you can place furniture around it and it should measure 4'x6' or 6'x8'. If you are looking for a rug to place on a hardwood or tiled floor then make sure that you are leaving at least eight inches of free space on all sides of the rug. A rug that measures 8'x11' or bigger is ideal for dining rooms, living rooms or family rooms. 3'x5' to 4'x6' is the perfect measurement for area rugs if you are looking to place them in a kitchen, bathroom, entrance or underneath a table. However, it is very important to remember that you should always choose a rug that you love and that catches your eye and do not choose a rug just because you think it will look right in the room.

Decorating a small living room

Decorating the interior of a small living room requires you to consider the space available so that the room when completed looks airy, bright and cheerful. In modern day homes, the high cost of real estate has led to rooms in apartments being smaller and this in turn restricts the sort of designs that you can execute for the living room.

So whether your interior design is modern or contemporary you need to keep in mind the area available and come up with an interior design that makes the best use of materials and colors and allows the final effect to be still be one of space and lightness.

Treatments to windows should not be bulky and use huge pelmets, jambs or sills that take up space. Heavy furnishings for a window in a living room that has restricted space could have the effect of making the room look smaller. Using blinds with the thinnest possible slats would help to give a feeling of space.

Furniture in small living rooms should be minimal and multifunctional. Floor space occupied by the furniture needs to be restricted so that the living room area looks as if it has enough circulation area. This can be done easily by seeing that the supports for the furniture occupy very little space on the ground. Open spaces below furniture can actually help to create the feeling of openness and space which is so important for small rooms.

Interior design of a living room would naturally include the colors on the walls. A small room would take more kindly to a single color or slight changes in the shades of individual walls. Having a number of colors can make a room actually look smaller, especially if some of the colors are of the darker hues.

A smaller living room calls for a lot of attention to be paid to the lighting. The limited light available that comes in from the windows can be accentuated with strategically placed mirrors or other reflecting surfaces. Use of a semi-gloss paint opposite the window can also help to increase the natural light in the room. When you decide on the lighting fixtures make sure that you do not use very elaborate shades, as these could further cause your room to look crowded.

Smaller spaces have as much potential as larger ones, when it comes to ideas for decorating. Even when placing decorative pieces around the house, limit them to just one or two on a table or shelf. Placing too many items on surfaces could make the room appear crowded. Decorating a small living room need not be too daunting a task if you consider all these aspects.

How to Display Photographs

Display of photographs in the rooms of your house demands ingenuity on your part. The photograph should be arranged in such a manner that any entrant to the rooms will glance a look at them. Keeping a collection of photographs on any counter surface in the living room would be a good idea. You can consider having a mix of old black and white alongside the colorful range of photographs in frames of a common color or design.

Walls are another favorite spot for displaying photographs. The wall should look neat and the wall color as well as lighting should appear as a perfect background for the photograph display. The angles and arrangement of photographs hung on the wall should be aesthetically done. Sizes of the frames should also be looked into. Apart from the living room, bedrooms and even bathrooms are the next favorite spots for display of photographs. Usually a bedroom showcases photographs of your loved ones. The side table near the bed or the wall facing your bed is popular for displaying photographs.

Since photographs can go piling up, the age-old album is a good way to preserve photographs. However remember to place them close to a coffee table or desk so that people can browse through them when in a mood to do so. It doesn't stop with the album, keeping photographs in an attractive photo box also finds convenience in many households. Other popular ways of displaying photographs that have caught on due to digital photography can be seen on T-shirts, cups, trays, calendars, and many more such displaying items.

It's about making the right choices and decorating small living spaces in order to create the right ambience and atmosphere in the room.

When decorating small living spaces it's always a good idea to opt for small furniture that can accentuate the available space. Avoiding bulky things or too compact pieces of furniture is probably required because creating a loud result in a small space can be very awkward. Slim lines and streamlined pieces can always make a difference and can be a very smart solution in your home, tricking the eye and making your given space look and feel larger.

When decorating small living spaces, you should always keep in mind that multi-functionality is an issue. It's better to have a few pieces that can be used in different ways, rather than having one piece for a particular job. A small desk in the living or sitting room can be an excellent alternative to the kitchen table; a small armoire in the hallway can provide you with additional storage room in a space where storage room can be an issue.

The Differences between Digital Clocks and Analogue Clocks

There are plenty of different clocks to choose from, have you considered a large digital display instead of a traditional analogue one? Digital clocks can be easier and faster to read for persons with failing eyesight, and also easier for children to learn to read.

There are several things you might want to consider.
  1. They are silent. You will get no ticking noise ever, which can be really irritating in analogue clocks. So a digital model may be better suited to places like a study, or entertainment room where you want it to be quiet.
  2. Read the time faster. Just like a digital watch, it is quicker to be able to glance at the face and see a number like 6:14am than it is to have to look to the hour, minute and second hand. As I mentioned, children will also find it easier to learn about time telling this way.
  3. A cool, sleek modern look. If you live in a new house styled around modern technology a sleek digital display can nicely bridge old to new. The traditional time honored concept of a wall clock is kept, but boldly redefined in modern form.
  4. Slimmer and more space saving than a traditional clock. Less wall space taken up again looks sleek and elegant.

Digital clocks are obviously always electronic, so require batteries to run off. Life cycle of batteries is similar to a conventional clock, about 12-18months between changes.

Choosing a digital clock will be a matter of personal preference entirely, and most people will still opt for an analogue instead. So it is a sure way of personalizing your house or room. As with most electronic goods you will find a good deal online at many shops.

How to Make a Small Room Looks Bigger

If you've got a small, cramped room in your house that people actually see or experience on a frequent basis, then you know how frustrating it can be to be inside a cave within your own how. We all love having large rooms to breathe in, but the fact is that sometimes the square footage just isn't there. Rather than complaining about what you have to work with, you can employ a few different techniques to maximize the openness of the space. Here are a few ideas to get you started.

Light Wall Colors
Anytime you put a dark color on the wall like navy blue or a deep maroon, you make the walls around you heavy. While this bold look may work for a great room, all it does to a small space is make it feel even more like a cave. You need to stick with light, airy colors for your walls so that the room has a sense of relief, rather than weight. Light yellows, beiges, and blues all fair well in most homes, depending on the context, of course.

Stripes
If you don't know this, the simple addition of stripes in your clothing can make you look taller or wider, depending on if they are vertical or horizontal. You can get the same effect with stripes on your walls. Vertical stripe will make your walls look taller if you have an issue with height, and horizontal stripes will make a room look wider if that's the problem. Be careful here though. Too many stripes could make the room busy, and when you have a small space to work with, you want to eliminate as much clutter as possible. Keep it simple and maintain the light color choices throughout.

Light Ceilings
Make sure that your ceiling is a lighter shade than your walls because that will really help open the room up. White or slightly off white ceilings are usually the best and should pair well with anything you paint the walls. Also be leery of excessive texture on the ceiling. Try to keep things minimal so you don't add an extra layer of enclosure to an already tight space.

Mirrors
The addition of mirrors can vastly improve the feel in a small space because of the reflection. For one, more light is able to bounce around because of the mirrors, thereby making it feel lighter already. Mirrors also reflect additional space in the room, even if it doesn't exist. Your mind will feel like it's in a bigger space when it really isn't. If you can find a tasteful way to do a full wall of mirrors, that could be an excellent source of openness.

Minimalistic, Multi-Purpose Furniture
Clutter is a small space's worst enemy. Avoid that at all costs. You want to keep your furniture small, simple, and clutter free. Only put in what you need to, and if you can find ways to get multiple purposes out of one piece, you'll save a lot of room. For instance, you might have a padded, long chest that can act as a bench, a storage area, and a coffee table with the addition of a tray on top. One piece can do three different things. You can make a desk that folds up onto a wall and looks like a piece of artwork until you're ready to use it, or you could have a couch that pulls out into a bed for guests. Get creative with your furnishings and always keep maximum function in minimal space in mind.

How to Choose the Suitable Wall Clock for Your Room

Like it or not, nearly everyone's lives are ruled by time. We need to know when and where, and no body can get by without a clock. Sure, there are clocks everywhere... on the microwave, the stove, the TV, but they don't exactly drip style!

A well chosen clock should complement your space, and will be a pleasure to look at as well as being just functional.

Here are a few key pointers.

  1. Is it big enough? If you need to put your glasses on to read the time, maybe you should look for big bold characters. It can still be elegant, just look for a large wall clock with black on white numbers. Also look for solid easy to see hands that you can see across the room.
  2. Color. In my experience decorating, it is best to stick to traditional colors for traditional objects. Plain colors or natural tones are generally safe, or otherwise ensure that at least one color area of the clock matches one of the dominant colors in the room (i.e. white walls will blend smoothly with a white face, even if the clock surround is another color).
  3. The tick. No, I'm not being silly here. Does it tick? how loud? An amazing number of people have complained to me that they had to get rid of their new clock because the tick drove them mad! Have a careful listen, and actually tip the clock onto its side, the way it will hang on the wall. It sounds trivial but the weight of the hands and mechanism can make the tick a lot more pronounced when side loaded.
  4. Style. I make no apologies for being conservative... but I have yet to come across a room where a plain, conservative wall clock would be out of place, provided its color didn't clash with the room. If in doubt, simply stick to old fashioned round face with plain digits. Then again if you want to be adventurous here is the chance - do a quick search online and you will find hundreds of clocks to suit any theme from nautical to horror movie memorabilia.

Some of the pool sunrooms have a three inch insulated aluminum roof. The roofing which consists of a wide panel which is approximately four feet long and the insulated roof is available in rolls which can be used according to the length required. The windows and doors are made of screened glass or aluminum glass doors having screens. Tempered glass panels are installed in areas that do not have windows and doors. You may need to add an extra two feet in length and a foot in width to cover the roof overhang requirements.

Generally the concrete deck is rectangular or square in shape. Around the concrete deck a minimum area of around three feet should be left all around the sides of the pool. You may need to send a photo of the deck area of the swimming pool along with your contact number, your address as well as your name, if you are ordering a pool sunroom from a company.

The total cost need not be paid at the time of delivery of the pool sunroom. Half the amount can be paid on delivery and the rest at the time of installation. Before installing the pool sunroom you will have to first check with the building authorities and take necessary permission.
